How Goals Make You More Productive

Posted December 15, 2006 in Leadership, Life, 6 Comments »

Scenario: "Dude, either you're born productive or you're not. You can't change that. Yay!"

Oh, sure your badass can.

Here's the secret:

Set some goals.

When you set some goals, you automatically make yourself more productive.

According to Psychologist Hara Estroff Marano:

Goals provide focus. With no guiding vision or plan, people tend to drift. Goals provide a measuring stick for progress. Goals enhance productivity. They bolster self-esteem. And most of all, goals increase commitment, so you're more likely to achieve whatever you set out to conquer.

Set some sweet goals.

What's more, when you realize that goals immediately affect how you perceive and live the present moment, you'll love having goals all the time.

The point of goals is that they give a certain quality for the present moment.

Go set a goal now.

Awesome point, Norbert. I can't think of a better way to boost productivity than habitually setting goals, and striving to achieve them. It's a drug of sorts.

[...] I don’t remember how I first came across it, but a post by Rajesh Setty from January 2006, his “New Year Resolutions Generator,” inspired me to start thinking about New Years resolutions a few weeks early this year. I know it’s already the 2nd of January (sorry, I meant to have this up earlier), but if you don’t have any resolutions yet, Raj’s list is a good one to spark some ideas. I know a lot of people don’t like making New Years resolutions, but as the folks over at Trizle say, “When you set some goals, you automatically make yourself more productive.” So after pondering for a month and eliminating the ones I didn’t really need, I set myself ten goals, or resolutions, for 2007. This is going to be a good year. Here they are: [...]
