How to Hire Team Members for Your Business
- "I like Chuck, but I don't like working with him."
- "He doesn't have the same work ethic as we do."
- "But we need him, so let's hire him!!"
As you bring in Chuck, he ruins your entire company's culture.
- Your business starts becoming less energized.
- The work ethic declines.
- You start sucking.
The Hiring Strategy
Try this:
- Those who fit your company's values/philosophy/work-ethic/etc. = internal team.
- Those who don't fit but are still needed = contractors/freelancers.
Hire internal people who fit your values system -- those who you:
- love working with
- know won't corrode your culture
- see as perfect representatives of your business
Contract the rest.
Those who fit.

It isn't like we know what it will be like working with someone day in day out till it happens. I think I prefer the idea of random strangers being hired, it sort of liven up the mix in a very strange unpredictable way

This is great advice if you are hiring from people you know however chances are that you are not If that is the case it is hard to say that you do not enjoy working with someone until after you have already hired them

You could always just bring them on as contractors to test them out Vic and tell them that over time they have the chance to be brought on as an actual employee. This way you get to see how everyone works with them without actually bringing them completely into the team.

This is a really great write up!
Nothing can kill a teams mojo more than throwing a bad apple into the bunch. The rot just spreads from there whether it's monkey see monkey do, or just a decrease in morale caused by discomfort.

Love the new images.
I think Zander offers a valid solution to the issue although not everyone will like being an IC.
It would allow you to see how people mix though.

So why not just hire people on a trial basis or on an inital temporary contract with a view to possibly extending that contract if you find the person does fit?
I don't think you truly get to know an employee until you actually throw them in with the team.

i think that's exactly what zander was suggesting misty ;)
it seems like the simple solution to the problem, and in this case it's also the best solution.

Very interesting, now I understand why those freelances were hired!

I think jseyah and zander are right.Hiring them on as ICs to start and try them out can be a really easy way to avoid permanently sticking your team with what might be a bad egg.
